The Cullman Tree Commission met April 21 at 10 a.m. at Cullman City Hall. City Arborist Shane Bivins reported business as usual and responded to several inquiries about tree clearing and other work currently taking place at city parks.
The only new business on the agenda was a vote to approve an invoice to CPRST (Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism) for two Chinese Pistache trees that were recently planted at the request of the commission. The invoice, in the amount of $71.92, will be submitted to the City for payment from special Tree Commission and arborist funds.
Chairman Barry Slatton said he felt this year’s Arbor Day Celebration and Tree City USA dedication ceremony in February was the best one yet. He noted that the event was well organized and that parents seemed to especially like having the winning student Arbor Day Poster Contest posters displayed at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatics Center, which was a first this year.
The commission also reported a successful Arbor Day tree sale in February. More than 50 seedlings were potted at the Tree Commission’s potting station, which helps improve their chances of survival and their likelihood of making it into the ground.
Additional discussion was held, and there were no guests present to speak.
The Cullman Tree Commission serves in an advisory role to the City and works to promote the planting, care, and preservation of trees throughout the community. The group also helps support Cullman’s Tree City USA designation and leads efforts like Arbor Day events, tree sales, and other community programs.
The Tree Commission normally meets on the third Tuesday of every even-numbered month at 10 a.m. at Cullman City Hall. All meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for June 16.
