CULLMAN, Ala. — Mayor Woody Jacobs today presented a proclamation recognizing June 21–28, 2026, as Amateur Radio Week in the City of Cullman. The proclamation was presented during a gathering at the Mayor’s Office on Friday, June 19, 2026, with members of the Cullman Amateur Radio Club in attendance.
Representing the club at the presentation were Tony Graves, Timothy Kerber, and Michael McCurley.
The proclamation recognizes the more than century-long tradition of amateur radio operators providing communications support, fostering international goodwill, and serving their communities through volunteer public service. Amateur radio operators play an important role in emergency preparedness and response, often providing communications support when traditional systems are unavailable or compromised.
The proclamation also highlights the contributions amateur radio operators make through their work with emergency response agencies, including the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency, and their participation as weather spotters in the National Weather Service SKYWARN® program. In addition, amateur radio volunteers donate countless hours supporting parades, fairs, charitable events, walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, and other community activities throughout the year.
“Amateur radio operators provide a valuable service to communities across the country, including here in Cullman,” said Mayor Jacobs. “Their commitment to public service, emergency preparedness, and community involvement helps make our city and county stronger and more resilient.”
The proclamation also recognizes the upcoming ARRL Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, scheduled for June 27–28, 2026. Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the event demonstrates the ability of amateur radio operators to establish and maintain emergency communications without relying on existing infrastructure.
By proclaiming Amateur Radio Week, Mayor Jacobs encourages all citizens to recognize and appreciate the important contributions amateur radio operators make to the community, emergency preparedness efforts, and the public good.
