CULLMAN, AL – At Cullman City Hall, Mayor Woody Jacobs recently proclaimed April 30 as National Therapy Animal Day in the City of Cullman, recognizing the vital role therapy animals and their handlers play in supporting individuals across the community.
Therapy animals provide comfort, support, and companionship in a wide range of settings, including schools, hospitals, nursing homes, courts, public safety agencies, and community events. Through volunteer service, these trained animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness while promoting healing, improving focus, encouraging social interaction, and enhancing overall well-being.
Local certified teams, including Cullman Therapy Dogs, serve Cullman and surrounding communities through visits to nursing homes, hospitals, schools, courthouses, libraries, public safety agencies, and community events. Their work helps reduce fear, support recovery, improve focus, and provide meaningful connection for people of all ages.
One of those teams includes Tammy Watson and her dog, Remy. A rescued therapy dog, Remy continues the legacy of Watson’s previous therapy dog, Rocko, who spent years working alongside her as a registered nurse, supporting children and veterans. Today, Remy visits schools, courtrooms, and other community settings, helping children build confidence, encouraging reading, and showing the importance of resilience and not judging others based on appearance or past experiences. Remy also plays a role in educating the public about adoption and breaking down misconceptions about certain dog breeds.
On hand for the presentation were Tammy Watson with Remy; Debra Reid with Tucker; Connie Lovell with Chance; Trina Pierce with Winston; Elena Caudle with Jake; and Paula Kretzschmar with Finn.
“These animals and their handlers make a real difference in people’s lives,” said Mayor Jacobs. “We’re grateful for the time and care they give to our community.”
Mayor Jacobs encouraged all citizens to recognize and thank therapy animals and their handlers for their dedicated service.
