The Cullman Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Cullman County. About Police Chief Joey Duncan
Police Chief Joey Duncan is a lifelong member of the Cullman community and a graduate of Cullman High School. He began his law enforcement career with the Cullman Police Department in July 2000 as a part-time correctional officer. After earning his degree in Criminal Justice from Wallace State Community College, he transitioned to a full-time correctional officer role in 2001 and moved into patrol duties in 2004.
Throughout his career, Chief Duncan has served in a variety of leadership and specialized roles within the department:
• Patrol Supervisor (promoted in 2019).
• Supervisor of the Traffic Unit (appointed in 2021).
• Field Training Program Coordinator.
• Traffic Homicide Unit Coordinator.
• Certified Traffic Crash Reconstructionist.
• Interim Patrol Captain prior to becoming Chief.
His experience demonstrates a deep commitment to traffic safety, officer training, and community-centered policing.
Chief Duncan was appointed by the Cullman City Council and sworn in by Mayor Woody Jacobs on September 23, 2024. He is married to Joy, a registered nurse, and they have one son, Chase.
Under his leadership, the Cullman Police Department continues to advance professionalism, public trust, and the department’s mission of serving and protecting the community with integrity and excellence.
