CULLMAN, Ala. — On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs signed a proclamation declaring October as “Beef Month” in the City of Cullman. The annual observance, celebrated statewide since 1964, recognizes the vital contributions of Alabama’s beef industry to local communities and the state’s economy.

“Cullman County’s beef sector is a cornerstone of our agricultural economy,” said Mayor Jacobs. “We are proud of its contributions to our community.”

Representing the Cullman County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen at the proclamation signing were Charles “Kayro” Gamble, Jesse Crumbley, and Lana Slaten. The Cullman County Cattlemen’s Association, a local chapter of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association (founded in 1944), includes more than 400 members across the county’s cattlemen, cattlewomen, and junior cattlemen groups. Together, they host educational programs, youth events, and community activities that promote the beef industry year-round.

The beef cattle business in Cullman County represents a $21.4 million industry that supports over 350 full-time jobs locally. The county ranks second in Alabama for cattle inventory, with more than 55,000 head of cattle and calves, according to recent USDA/NASS estimates.

Beyond its economic value, the beef industry plays an important role in environmental stewardship. Local producers maintain healthy soil and pastures, manage water runoff responsibly, and utilize otherwise indigestible plants to produce nutrient-dense beef rich in protein, B-vitamins, zinc, and iron.

“We commend our beef producers for their dedication and innovation,” said Mayor Jacobs. “As we observe Beef Month, we also celebrate the vital role they play in supporting our economy, feeding our families, and sustaining our way of life.”
