The Cullman Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Cullman County. As a full-service police agency, the department embraces a community-oriented approach and relies on active community involvement to develop effective problem-solving strategies. By fostering strong community partnerships, the department works to provide a safe and secure environment for all residents, visitors, and businesses.
Police Chief is Joey Duncan. Assistant Police Chief is Brandon Patterson. The Public Safety Director, overseeing both Police and Fire, is Brian Bradberry.
Police Chief Joey Duncan, a graduate of Cullman High School, began his law enforcement career in July 2000 as a part-time correctional officer with the Cullman Police Department. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Wallace State Community College, which laid the foundation for his extensive career. In 2001, he became a full-time correctional officer and transitioned to patrol duties in 2004, later being promoted to patrol supervisor in 2019.
In 2021, Duncan became the supervisor of the Traffic Unit, demonstrating his expertise in traffic management. He returned to a patrol supervisor role in 2024 and has served as the Coordinator for the Field Training Program and the Traffic Homicide Unit, becoming a certified Traffic Crash Reconstructionist. Most recently, he held the position of Interim Patrol Captain.
Chief Duncan was appointed by the Cullman City Council and sworn in by Mayor Woody Jacobs on September 23, 2024. He is married to Joy, a registered nurse, and they have a son, Chase.
