The Cullman Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Cullman County. Police Chief Joey Duncan, a graduate of Cullman High School, began his law enforcement career in July 2000 as a part-time correctional officer with the Cullman Police Department. He then pursued a degree in Criminal Justice from Wallace State Community College, which laid the foundation for his extensive career. In 2001, he became a full-time correctional officer and transitioned to patrol duties in 2004. His dedication led to his promotion to patrol supervisor in 2019.
In 2021, Duncan became the supervisor of the Traffic Unit, showcasing his expertise in traffic management. He returned to a patrol supervisor position in 2024 and has served as the Coordinator for the Field Training Program and the Traffic Homicide Unit, establishing himself as a certified Traffic Crash Reconstructionist. Most recently, he held the role of Interim Patrol Captain.
Duncan was appointed Police Chief by the Cullman City Council and sworn in by Mayor Woody Jacobs on Monday, September 23, 2024. He is married to Joy, a registered nurse, and they have a son, Chase.
