WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Warriors were at home for the first time this season Friday night and they welcomed in the Lawrence County Red Devils for a regional showdown.
Whitt Laney got things started off on the right for West Point when he took the opening kickoff and ran it down all the way inside the Red Devils’ 10-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Will Cochran punched one in from 2 yards out to give the Warriors a very early 7-0 advantage. After forcing a Lawrence County punt, West Point went back to work on offense and extended its lead with a 47-yard flea flicker touchdown pass from Cochran to Branson Smith that made it 13-0 in the first quarter.
A Jacob Dye interception ended the next Red Devils possession and just a few plays later, running back Kelton Washington scored from 4 yards out to stretch the early lead to 20-0 midway through the second. Lawrence County was able to put a drive together and score from 6 yards out with under two minutes to play in the quarter to make it a 20-7 game at the half.
The Red Devils’ first possession of the second half was also cut short by an interception, this time by Laney, but Cochran gave it back a few plays later when he was picked off in Lawrence County territory. The Warriors held on a fourth and one play late in the third quarter and on their ensuing possession, Cochran found Brody Rusk down around the goal line for an 8-yard touchdown pass that put West Point on top 35-7 early in the fourth quarter.
Cochran ran in his second touchdown of the night midway through the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 42-7 and the Warriors went on to win it by a final of 42-14.
Cochran led all rushers with 109 yards and two touchdowns on the night while Washington finished behind him with 47 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown of his own. Smith led the receiving corps with 71 yards and a touchdown on four catches and Cochran completed nine of his 13 passes for 114 yards and two scores in the win. Lawrence County was held to just 105 yards on the ground and 250 total yards on the night.
The Warriors are now 2-2 with a 1-1 record in the region and they’ll be back in action next week when they travel to take on Russellville for another region matchup.
