Description

This is a semi-skilled and frequently minor supervisory work in the operation of trucks and related automotive equipment, including attached mechanical equipment, as a major portion of work assignments.

Scope of work: Employees in this class are responsible for the skilled and safe operation of automotive equipment and for the prompt execution of assignments according to established routine or frequently include responsibility for supervising employees assigned to trucks as loaders or helpers.  Where equipment operation is less difficult or strenuous, there is added responsibility for performance of supervisory or related semi-skilled tasks.  Work is reviewed through personal inspection and through observation of compliance with established work or route schedules.

 

Responsibilities

Major Job Tasks: (All duties listed may not be found in each position, nor does the list necessarily include all tasks which may be assigned to positions of this class.)

  1. Performs rough carpentry work such as building concrete forms, wooden fences, shipping crates and other work in connection with the construction and maintenance of water and sewer utilities, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, bridges, and buildings.
  2. Performs such tasks as finishing concrete and setting forms for curbs and gutters.
  3. Performs rough sign and other brush and spray painting work not involving difficult or original lettering, repairs, fabricates, and erects metal and wooden street signs; lays out and paints center lines and lane lines in streets, crosswalks and parking spaces.
  4. Operates light truck and other automotive and related equipment.
  5. Operated mechanical saws, cuts and fells trees and branches, observing precautions against personal injury or property damage.
  6. Performs miscellaneous mechanical and maintenance repair tasks requiring familiarity with basic trade practices in carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing or similar operations.
  7. Drives trucks hauling dirt, sand, gravel, lumber, and other materials to or from places of work.
  8. Services equipment and makes minor field repairs and adjustments, reports the need for major repairs to equipment.
  9. Supervises, as requires, and preforms manual labor in loading, unloading or other related work as required.
  10. Operates and uses all hand tools associated with plant and equipment
  11. Cleans buildings
  12. Paints lift stations and buildings/ equipment
  13. Mows yards, to include pump stations
  14. Operates various types of riding mowers, leaf blowers, and weed eaters.
  15. Performs light maintenance on mowers
  16. Operates small trenching equipment
  17. Assists others on heavier maintenance tasks
  18. Paint lift stations and buildings/ equipment
  19. Light to heavy welding
  20. Moves 55 gallon drums of polymer
  21. Maintenance on all plant and pump station equipment
  22. Train and develop full working knowledge of belt press
  23. Maintains and keeps maintenance records on belt press
  24. Makes rounds and check equipment and perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs
  25. Any other task deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications

Experience: Some experience in the operation of trucks and related automotive equipment.

Knowledge and Skills: Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of automotive equipment operation.  Some knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.  Some knowledge of occupational hazards of applicable safety precautions in operating equipment.  Some knowledge of the geography of the city, including the locations of streets, or the ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.  General knowledge of computers. Have basic knowledge in operating video equipment and repairs of electronics. Skilled in the operation of various types of standard automotive equipment as demonstrated by a driving test.  Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments and to service automotive equipment.  Ability to perform tasks such as but not limited to; repairs to water utilities, sewer utilities, roads, landscaping, etc.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to repair pumps.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to maneuver various sized vehicles.
  2. Eyesight sufficient to pass a standard driving test.
  3. Physical strength and endurance to perform heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
  4. Able to walk on even or rough terrain, rocky or sandy soil, in wet or slippery conditions.
  5. Be able to enter manholes and work in close and enclosed areas.
  6. Bending, stooping, and heavy lifting are required in this position.
  7. Ability to handle moderate to extreme weather conditions (temperatures, heat, rain, cold, etc.).
  8. Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Other Requirements:

  1. Mandatory to work overtime and/or alternating shifts, including weekends, as required.
  2. Optional CDL as required by Department Head.
  3. Position is subject to random drug testing.
  4. All other tasks required by superintendent.
