Equipment Operator (Water/Wastewater)
Description

This is a semi-skilled and frequently minor supervisory work in the operation of trucks and related automotive equipment, including attached mechanical equipment, as a major portion of work assignments.

Responsibilities

Employees in this class are responsible for the skilled and safe operation of automotive equipment and for the prompt execution of assignments according to established routine or special instructions received from a supervisor. Employees may also perform manual labor, and the duties frequently include responsibility for supervising employees assigned to trucks as loaders or helpers. Where equipment operation is less difficult or strenuous, there is added responsibility for performance of supervisory or related semi-skilled tasks. Work is reviewed through personal inspection and through observation of compliance with established work or route schedules.

MAJOR JOB TASKS: (All duties listed may not be found in each position. Also, this list does not necessarily include all tasks which may be assigned to positions in this class.)

  • Perform rough carpentry work such as building concrete forms, wooden fences, shipping crates, and other work in connection with the construction and maintenance of water and sewer utilities, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, bridges, and railings.
  • Perform such tasks as finishing concrete and setting forms for curbs and gutters.
  • Perform rough sign and other brush and spray painting work not involving difficult or original lettering; repair, fabricate, and erect metal and wooden street signs; lay out and paint center lines and lane lines in streets, crosswalks, and parking places.
  • Operate light truck and other automotive and related equipment.
  • Operate mechanical saws, cut trees and branches, observe precautions against personal injury or property damage.
  • Perform miscellaneous mechanical and maintenance repair tasks requiring familiarity with basic trade practices in carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing, or similar operations.
  • Drive trucks hauling dirt, sand, gravel, lumber, and other materials to or from places of work.
  • Service equipment and make minor field repairs and adjustments; report the need for major repairs to equipment.
  • Supervise, as required, and perform manual labor in loading, unloading, or other related work as required.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Operate small trenching equipment.
  • Operate video equipment and make repairs to electronics.
  • Any other task deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications

Experience: Some experience in the operation of trucks and related automotive equipment.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of automotive equipment operation.
  • Some knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.
  • Some knowledge of occupational hazards of applicable safety precautions in operating equipment.
  • Some knowledge of the geography of the city, including the locations of streets, or the ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly.
  • Skill in the operation of various types of standard automotive equipment as demonstrated by a driving test.
  • Ability to perform tasks such as, but not limited to, repairs to water utilities, sewer utilities, roads, landscaping, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to maneuver various sized vehicles.
  • Eyesight sufficient to pass a standard driving test.
  • Physical strength and endurance to perform heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk on even or rough terrain, rocky or sandy soil, or in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Ability to enter manholes and to work in close and enclosed areas.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and perform heavy lifting as required in the position.
  • Ability to handle moderate to extreme weather conditions (temperatures, heat, rain, cold, etc.)

Other Requirements:

  • Mandatory to work overtime and/or alternating shifts, including weekends, as required.
  • Must maintain a valid Alabama commercial driver license (CDL) to drive CC vehicles (Class B).
  • Position is subject to random drug testing.
