HOW TO BECOME A FIREFIGHTER

Application process/ job requirements for a City of Cullman Firefighter/Advanced EMT position:

A. Submit an application to the City of Cullman Human Resources Department

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Alabama driver’s license

B. Successfully complete firefighter written exam with a passing score of 70%

C. Provide written confirmation of successful completion of Alabama Fire College approved Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or State of Alabama Firefighter I/II certification. (Information relating to CPAT and other prerequisites for Firefighter I/II certification can be found at http://www.alabamafirecollege.net/)

D. Dependent upon qualifications and/or eligibility list placement may be called for a panel interview

If recommended by the Fire Chief for potential employment applicant must successfully complete:

E. Drug and Alcohol Testing

F. NFPA 1582 Physical Exam

G. Employment Background Screening

The following requirements must be successfully completed and maintained in order to retain permanent employment:

H. Annual NFPA 1582 Physical Exam and Physical Agility Test

I. Random Drug and Alcohol Testing

J. State of Alabama Firefighter I/II certification within 1 year of employment (Approximately 9 weeks)

K. Emergency Medical Technician certification within 1 year of employment – EMS certification in Alabama is granted by the Alabama Department of Public Health and administered through various community colleges (Approximately 1 college semester)

L. Hazardous Materials Technician certification (40-hour course)
